Curio x UAL

Who are they

University of the Arts London (UAL) is one of the UK’s leading institutions for art, design, and creative education, ranked #2 in the world for art and design

The Brief

We were commissioned to create four online learning videos for the Graphic Design MA course. We knew that these eLearning videos not only needed to effectively inform the viewer’s, but it also had to look really good. It needed to feel considered and creatively led to fit the tone of such a creative course.

The Output

Each video features Michaela French, a lecturer at UAL, delivering course material directly to camera. We filmed using two angles: a wide primary shot that gradually shifted to a tighter frame, helping to build a sense of closeness over time. The secondary angle introduced soft visual textures using a rotating prism to add depth without distraction. The Prism is an expression of Michaela’s own artistic practice. She works with light and refraction and we wanted to weave her own visual style into the fabric of our film.

We made sure to find a suitable space for filming, ensuring it was large enough to create a strong sense of space. We took care of set design and wardrobe to keep the visuals varied. For example, Dr French wore different outfits for each video to create a subtle feeling of progression. We were focused on the perfect set up to make sure everything felt right for a visually literate audience.

A second shoot day focused on B-roll. Here, we leaned into Michaela’s own artistic practice, capturing abstract projection work in studio settings. This included title sequences where she interacted with projected phrases like “Find your inspiration,” creating immersive, layered visuals that added texture and energy to the course.

This introduction video is structured to mirror the graphic design process itself. It begins with Michaela arriving at UAL, passing examples of graphic design in the real world. Colours are initially muted, until a colour chart appears, revealing the impact of professional grading and highlighting visual design in action.

We then follow Michaela through a sequence of research, experimentation and refinement. Macro lens shots of design books add texture, while chapter breaks offer space to pause and reflect. The process builds to a final installation, projected onto Michaela, made entirely from the course manifesto. The video’s structure mirrors the course itself: research, experiment, refine, finalise.

The Bold Difference..

Instead of relying on flashy graphics or over-editing, we made careful use of tone, framing and pacing to let the material speak. We pushed for creative decisions at every step, from securing the right space to designing each shot around visual interest and authenticity. For students and creatives who expect more than just information, we delivered eLearning that feels designed.
